Published on

Charleston has announced its programme of autumn evening events, set to take place in the renovated Hay Barn at the venue in Firle.

The series features a programme of in-depth conversations with prominent figures from the artistic and creative industries.

The full schedule is available through the Charleston website.

Contemporary artist David Shrigley, known for his distinctive humorous illustrations, appears among the speakers.

On September 25, Shrigley will explore the relationship between text and image, the process of making art, and the unexpected profundity of ordinary situations during an event titled Creative Writing.

The examination of artistic inspiration continues on October 8 with The Creative Garden, during which Stephanie Mahon, editor of Gardens Illustrated, and landscape architect Annie Guilfoyle will join Nigel Slater and Sarah Price for a discussion on how horticulture can fuel creative output.

Kate Mosse, whose recent publication Autumn blends nature writing, autobiographical reflection, and a tribute to the Sussex landscape, appears in the programme on October 23.

The legacy and creative work of Quentin Bell will be examined by members of his family, including writer and historian Virginia Nicholson, textile artist and designer Cressida Bell, and art critic Julian Bell, who will share insights into their father’s artistic approach.

Art historian and exhibitions specialist Jo Baring will investigate sculptural practice on November 13, addressing themes of imagination, memory, and the fundamental human impulse towards artistic expression.

General ticket sales began on August 27 at 10am.

Concession pricing and £10 tickets are available for those aged under 30 throughout the series.
