Hastings marks 1,000th anniversary of William the Conqueror with Norman events

Published on

Hastings is commemorating a significant historical milestone with an extensive programme of events focused on Norman heritage.

The town is marking the millennium since William the Conqueror’s birth through various activities and exhibitions.

Among the highlights is the Hastings Embroidery, which was originally created in 1966 to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

The textile work is now exhibited at Hastings Town Hall.

The display, running through October, coincides with the Bayeux Tapestry’s appearance at the British Museum.

Admission to view the embroidery is complimentary, with places reservable through the event booking platform.

Beginning on Friday, August 28, visitors can also follow a Norman-themed banner trail connecting Hastings Station to Hastings Castle.

The banners emerged from a community competition inviting local participation in the anniversary celebrations.

Hastings Contemporary Gallery has arranged a Bayeux Family Day for October, with additional themed workshops scheduled throughout the coming weeks.

On Saturday, September 12, Hastings Castle will stage Beyond the Bayeux, an immersive production incorporating music, theatrical performance and projection displays.

Details for attending are accessible through the castle’s official website.

Hastings Borough Council expressed appreciation to the Sussex Community Rail Partnership and Community Rail Network for financing the banner trail, as well as to Booker and Best for their installation work.

Councillor Julia Hilton, deputy leader of the council and portfolio holder for regeneration, place-shaping and community wealth building, commented that the town was pleased to be honouring the thousandth anniversary of William the Conqueror’s birth, noting his substantial role in the town’s history.

Residents were encouraged to visit the Hastings Embroidery, which the councillor described as an exceptional piece covering nine centuries of Norman heritage.

Gratitude was extended to partner organisations supporting the events and to those coordinating activities to mark the anniversary.

Full details regarding the anniversary programme appear on the Visit Hastings platform.

Additional announcements are anticipated in the weeks ahead as the town continues to recognise its historical ties to William the Conqueror and the Norman conquest.
