An adapted cycling initiative in Horsham has enabled dozens of residents to return to pedalling, including individuals managing Parkinson’s disease and those recovering from strokes.

The scheme operated from The Bridge Leisure Centre’s athletics track, where a variety of modified bicycles and tricycles catered to participants’ specific physical requirements.

Over fifty people engaged with the programme, with many having not sat on a cycle for considerable periods.

Trained instructors from the Wheels for ALL scheme offered guidance throughout, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all involved.

Three additional sessions were arranged specifically for members of the Phoenix Stroke Club during August.

Mark Baynham, deputy leader of Horsham District Council and cabinet member responsible for finance, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and noted that numerous participants experienced the pleasure of cycling again after lengthy gaps.

He observed that several attendees had assumed their conditions would permanently prevent them from riding.

The councillor added that a number of those who took part have since indicated interest in continuing with the regular weekly Wheels for ALL sessions.

He emphasised the council’s commitment to supporting active lifestyles among all residents as part of efforts to build flourishing communities, highlighting these inclusive cycling opportunities as an effective means of enabling people with varying abilities to access exercise, enhance wellbeing, and feel integrated within their community.

Beyond the physical advantages, the sessions provided meaningful social contact and an opportunity to reconnect with a beloved activity.

The Horsham Wheels for ALL initiative conducts weekly sessions between April and October, supplying adapted bicycles and tricycles alongside qualified instructors.

The programme welcomes participants of all ages and capabilities, with the objective of assisting individuals in becoming more physically engaged while developing self-assurance and general health through cycling.
