West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has revealed that more than one hundred electric blankets were deemed unsafe during safety inspections carried out last autumn.

The free testing programme examined 334 blankets in total, with 102 classified as presenting a significant fire hazard.

According to safety guidance, blankets exceeding two years of age ought to undergo regular inspection, while those reaching ten years should be discarded completely.

Residents wishing to have their blankets examined can now schedule appointments for this year’s complimentary sessions by contacting 0345 872 9719.

The events will feature guidance from multiple partner organisations, including nurses from the Prevention Assessment Team, representatives of the Sussex Fraud Team, members of Neighbourhood Watch, and advisors from the Citizens Advice Energy Team at selected venues.

Samantha Barber, who serves as safe and well manager for the fire and rescue service, expressed satisfaction with the initiative, noting that out of 334 blankets tested during the previous campaign, 102 were identified as unsafe and presenting fire risks.

She urged householders to arrange for blanket assessments, describing the process as straightforward and capable of offering both reassurance and protection for households.

Support staff will be available throughout the sessions to provide assistance and address queries.
