A collective of environmental activists has urged their parliamentary representative to support immediate measures on energy reform.
Supporters of the Hanover Action group dispatched correspondence to MP Sian Berry on August 16, requesting her backing for a swift transition to clean energy sources, an immediate prohibition on fresh fossil fuel initiatives and enhanced legal frameworks to achieve genuine energy self-sufficiency.
The demand for action comes after recent severe heatwaves across Britain and the unveiling of an Energy Independence Bill, which advocates describe as a vital chance to cease new fossil fuel extraction and completely adopt renewable alternatives.
Sarah Gorton, a founding member of Hanover Action, explained that households throughout Brighton are finding it difficult to manage their energy expenses. The group emphasises the need for energy independence to circumvent these price surges. They point out that renewable sources are more affordable and produce fewer emissions.
She added that the new record-breaking temperature extremes recorded in June demonstrated that the climate emergency has arrived and that failing to transition away from polluting fossil fuels swiftly would only worsen an already critical situation.
She stated that now is the moment to adopt renewable energy with the full commitment this situation demands.
The correspondence, endorsed by worried local residents, presses for an instant moratorium on fresh oil and gas development, encompassing the Rosebank venture.
It additionally calls on the administration to fulfill and legally bind its electoral pledge to halt new oil and gas licensing, and to expedite the move towards renewable energy as a matter of national security, financial stability and environmental duty.
The activists contend that areas such as Brighton are grappling with a dual crisis—economic fragility stemming from reliance on unpredictable international fossil fuel markets alongside the intensifying effects of the climate emergency.
The letter observes that recent developments in the Middle East exposed the severe economic repercussions of depending on worldwide fossil fuel markets.
It notes that conversations with initiatives like Phoenix and Pankhurst, which provide affordable food provisions, reveal the hardships confronting families throughout Brighton.
The correspondence suggests that the Energy Independence Bill could provide a route out of this precarious position for local communities.
Ian Macintyre, another participant in Hanover Action, commented that the group is conveying a unambiguous signal that local residents are unified in requiring action.
He emphasised that this concerns shielding the community from additional energy disruptions, sidestepping the expense of inaction whilst preserving environmental stability.
