More than 30 properties have been modified to accommodate residents with disabilities through a programme funded by the local authority.

During the second quarter of this year, 34 Disabled Facilities Grants were finalised, delivering 40 home modifications throughout the district.

These alterations enable inhabitants to remain in their own properties with greater independence and ease.

Cllr Glenn Haffenden, who leads Hastings Borough Council and holds the housing portfolio, expressed enthusiasm about the impact of the grants, noting that favourable feedback from those receiving the modifications had been gratifying. He encouraged those renting their property to speak with their landlord, as property owners can submit applications on behalf of tenants and frequently residents are not required to provide any financial contribution.

The expenditure on the modifications carried out during this three-month timeframe reached £376,597.08.

The grants cover various alterations such as stairlifts, accessible showers and the construction of ground-floor sleeping areas and bathrooms.

Those eligible to apply include owner-occupiers, those renting privately and residents of housing association properties.

An evaluation conducted by an Occupational Therapist forms part of the assessment procedure to determine which modifications would be most appropriate for each individual.
