Period home designed by legendary architect goes on sale for over £3million

A period home designed by a legendary architect is on sale for more than £3million.

The semi-detached house at 1 Montpelier Villas, Brighton, was built in the 1840s and designed by renowned architect Amon Henry Wilds.

Amon Henry Wilds was an architect from Lewes who, alongside his father Amon Wilds and partner Charles Busby, was almost solely responsible for shaping Brighton’s distinctive Regency character, designing landmark schemes such as Kemp Town, Brunswick Town, and Regency Square.

The trio built nearly 4,000 new houses in Brighton during the 1820s alone, many of which survive today as listed buildings, giving the city its celebrated Regency-era streetscapes.

The house listed for sale by Hamptons is situated in the Montpelier Conservation Area, known for its Regency homes.

The six-bedroom home is set across four floors, with a floor space of 4,012sqft.

A spokesman for Hamptons said: “Number 1 is a supremely spacious and light residence.

“Tall windows and soaring ceilings – characteristic of the era – contribute to the feeling of space, while an array of period features such as original sash windows, wood floors, picture rails, and ceiling roses are complemented by a modern décor scheme.”

The house also boasts four bathrooms, a library, a study, a family room, a kitchen/dining room, a laundry room, a cloakroom, and a reception hall.

The property has been restored and updated in recent years, including a new kitchen, bathrooms, and solar slates, as well as double glazing to the rear and a triple-glazed skylight.

The ground floor has two reception spaces, both with bow bay windows and feature fireplaces. At the rear, an open-plan kitchen and dining room has doors leading out to the back garden.

The lower ground floor has a reception room, utility room, and two double bedrooms, one with an ensuite.

The remaining bedrooms are arranged over the first and second floors, with a principal suite of bedroom and dressing room, with an adjoining shower room, three further spacious doubles, and a family bathroom on the first floor.

There is a further ensuite double bedroom and generous boarded loft space on the second floor.

The garden is “aptly designed for town living” and is enclosed by “high walls affording excellent privacy.
