A man is facing charges following an alleged rape of a woman at a flat in Brighton.

Sussex Police confirmed the incident is alleged to have taken place between the night of July 29 and the following day at a residence on High Street in Brighton.

The woman is receiving assistance from specially trained officers as inquiries progress.

On Friday July 31, officers took a man into custody as part of the investigation.

The next day, Hany Mohamed, aged 37, a British citizen with no permanent home, appeared in court charged with rape and common assault.

Mohamed was held in custody when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday August 3, pending his next court appearance scheduled for September 1.

Detective Superintendent Ben Newman stated that inquiries have been progressing quickly, charges have now been approved and the defendant has been placed on remand.

He expressed admiration for the bravery demonstrated by the victim in reporting the crime and assisting police with their inquiries.

He noted that rape and other serious sexual crimes rank among the most severe matters police deal with, adding that such offences can cause deeply damaging and long-term effects on those affected, and have absolutely no place in society.

Police remain committed to working relentlessly to locate and prosecute those responsible for these devastating crimes, safeguarding vulnerable individuals, providing support to victims and ensuring those who commit such offences face justice in court.
