A housing development on the edge of Hastings has been given the go-ahead.

Hastings Borough Council revealed on April 24 that proposals to build 26 dwellings on land situated to the west of Rock Lane in Hastings have secured formal planning consent.

The current version of the scheme, put forward by Jerboa Homes Limited, received approval from the council’s planning committee in July the preceding year.

Permission was granted on the condition that the developer would sign a legal agreement ensuring affordable housing units and monetary contributions for library services and play area facilities.

The draft legal document was published on the council’s planning website, and the scheme received final backing.

An earlier application from the same developer had been turned down in November 2020 over concerns about its potential impact on the High Weald National Landscape, formerly known as the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

When the planning committee met in July the previous year, officers reported that the scheme had been revised to address the raised objections. They accepted it would still result in minimal damage to the High Weald, but determined that the benefits of delivering extra homes would outweigh this drawback.

The council received 45 letters of protest. Objectors argued the scheme would strain local services and remove protected green spaces.

Guestling Parish Council also submitted an objection, citing worries about drainage infrastructure and additional traffic on local roads.

The development is expected to include ten affordable homes.
