A fire service worker from Worthing is preparing to compete in the London Marathon after finally obtaining a spot in the event following years of attempts.
Matt Wainwright, who serves as a firefighter, will take part in the race on 26 April. He is collecting money for Crohn’s and Colitis UK, an organisation that has assisted his family ever since his daughter Sophie received a diagnosis of the condition in 2014.

After ten years of submitting applications, this marks the inaugural occasion he has obtained entry to the competition.
Mr Wainwright expressed that after a decade of seeking a position in the marathon, he was thrilled to have finally been granted a place this year. He stated that his selected cause is Crohn’s and Colitis UK, which holds significant personal importance to him.
He continued that Sophie has experienced multiple uncomfortable symptoms and undergone numerous treatments for an illness that presently cannot be cured. The funds collected will assist the organisation in financing research into improved therapies, increasing public knowledge and continuing to help those affected by the condition and their relatives.
Crohn’s and Colitis UK has established a fundraising goal of £2,500.
