Plans for a new café-bar establishment in a coastal town are progressing. Worthing Borough Council’s licensing and control sub-committee is scheduled to review an application for a premises licence at 6-8 New Street on April 29.

Dale Travers has submitted the request to sell alcoholic drinks, provide entertainment, and serve late-evening food at the location.

Under the suggested operating schedule, the establishment would operate from 9am until 1.30am on Sundays through Wednesdays, and from 9am until 2.30am on Thursdays through Saturdays.

Alcohol would be available for purchase from 11am until 1am on Sundays through Wednesdays, and from 11am until 2am on Thursdays through Saturdays.

Trading hours would also be extended by two hours on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve, and Easter Sunday.

The property previously functioned as a café-bar trading as The Last Melon until November of last year, having also previously operated as a restaurant.

The former licence was cancelled following The Last Melon’s liquidation.

The fresh application also requests authorisation to play recorded music with equivalent extended trading hours.

However, local residents and council departments have raised concerns regarding potential noise and disturbances from late-night operations.

Officers from Arun and Worthing Councils’ Environmental Protection Team noted that since 2022, the previous business had received noise complaints from nearby households, particularly during special events and late-night trading periods.

Sussex Police initially submitted an objection but subsequently withdrew their opposition after the applicant accepted a series of conditions, including the employment of security personnel from 10pm until closing time on Fridays and Saturdays.

The agreed conditions also require the venue to close its outdoor seating area at 10pm and to cease admitting patrons after 1.30am.
