A forthcoming event will explore how migration shapes global art and cultural output.
Art That Moves, a global gathering curated by University of Brighton academic and practitioner Dr Lucia King, is set to occur at the university’s City campus on April 23.
The meeting will explore the ways in which movement between cultures, nations and communities is influencing creative work today.
Dr King, who teaches in the university’s School of Art and Media, explained that the event brings together creators and thinkers whose projects challenge established ideas about identity, belonging and artistic production, creating spaces for vital conversations about how contemporary art might better reflect complex viewpoints on identity. Art That Moves examines how migration conditions and cultural mobility are changing not only how art is made, but also how it is understood, curated and shared among diverse international art communities.
The conference forms part of a seven-day programme taking place across Brighton and Central Saint Martins in the capital.
The schedule encompasses talks, film screenings, participatory workshops and a short-term display tackling issues of exile, belonging and cultural reassessment.
The roster will showcase both renowned and up-and-coming voices from the international art world, among them Danish-Trinidadian creator Jeannette Ehler, whose work investigates race, colonialism and Black history in Denmark.
Other speakers include Alessio Antoniolli, director of the Triangle Network, moviemaker Parwana Haydar and Whiskey Chow, whose projects explore queer experiences within Southeast Asian diaspora communities.
Students, alumni and PhD researchers from Brighton and Central Saint Martins will additionally take part in a joint showcase linked to the conference theme.

Jennifer Jones, a PhD researcher at Brighton whose work will be presented, said she had deeply appreciated the opportunity to contribute to Art That Moves and had learned a great deal. She particularly valued working alongside a group working towards common goals with supportive guidance.
The event is open to members of the public and especially invites those from creative sectors, academia and the wider arts field to attend.
