Anger erupts over car park fines after drivers penalised for exiting

A parliamentarian has condemned what she describes as overly invasive procedures at a local car park, after receiving complaints about £100 fines issued to individuals who leave the premises on foot.

The member of parliament representing Bognor Regis and Littlehampton has attacked the setup at Wick Parade car park in Littlehampton, describing it as surveillance and stating it is creating considerable distress among local residents and traders.

According to fresh regulations, motorists may use the Wick location for stays lasting up to three hours. Yet should the cameras detect them departing the Wick Parade vicinity to browse adjacent stores, they face an instant £100 charge from the company One Parking Solution Ltd.

Notices at the facility state that parking remains reserved exclusively for Wick Parade patrons who stay within the grounds. Motorists heading back within sixty minutes can also incur penalties under these conditions.

Ms Griffiths initiated a questionnaire about this matter, which concluded at the start of this week, inviting people to recount their encounters, with over one thousand submissions received.

She has elevated the disagreement to Parliament, calling for measures addressing the broader problem of what she describes as improper parking enforcement tactics.

She is simultaneously pursuing an immediate gathering with the property owner and the parking operator to reach a settlement.

The site operates under constant CCTV surveillance. Ms Griffiths expressed that her priority lies in obtaining a reasonable resolution that safeguards customer entry, assists independent traders, and rebuilds public trust in the facility.

She indicated plans to collaborate with fellow legislators to advocate for formal regulatory standards governing private parking companies.

The firm has encountered opposition elsewhere in Sussex, and in 2019 was informed it would forfeit a Peacehaven retail parking contract after neighbouring businesses reported that its strict enforcement was deterring shoppers.

Operating from Worthing, the enterprise holds a one-star rating on Google based on more than five hundred testimonials.

Journalists from The Argus have contacted One Parking Solution seeking response.

In remarks supplied to the BBC earlier this month, the company indicated that usage terms and conditions at the Wick Parade car park are prominently exhibited, and advised drivers to review notices and select alternative parking if unwilling to comply with the regulations.
