A council has issued a statement after a shop was unable to open its doors when vomit and human excrement were found blocking the entrance.

On the Wednesday (April 15), workers at the House of Pecksniff situated on Bond Street in Brighton arrived to discover the area outside their front entrance had been covered in vomit and waste.

An employee, who wished to stay anonymous, told The Argus she reached the premises at around 10am only to find the disgusting scene.

She explained that someone had been occupying the doorway, although this individual had already been removed by the time she got there.

Despite help from Brilliant Brighton (BID) staff, the worker expressed annoyance at how long it took for Brighton and Hove City Council’s City Clean team to attend.

City Clean is responsible for maintaining streets across Brighton and Hove, including clearing away litter, dog faeces, and harmful substances left in public spaces.

The employee mentioned that the BID turned up and got in contact with City Clean.

They had been ringing since 10am right through until that point (around 11.30am), and even went down to the council offices in person.

They were apparently told there was no immediate solution available and simply advised to keep ringing.

Brighton and Hove City Council has since explained that workers attended the scene as promptly as they could manage, having been sent from another job elsewhere in the city.

A council spokesperson said: The authority’s Environmental Services teams carry out both routine and emergency street cleaning throughout the city, and council workers would obviously attend incidents presenting hygiene or public health risks.

On this occasion a crew attended and disinfected the spot as quickly as possible, arriving within approximately one hour of the report being logged, after coming from a separate incident at another location in the city.
