Around 2,500 properties were impacted by water supply issues due to a suspected burst main.

South East Water customers in Eastbourne lost supply yesterday, April 16.

Schools in the area, including The Eastbourne Academy, were forced to close due to the issue.

At around 5.30pm yesterday, the water company reported it had carried out “valve operations at a nearby site”, with supply beginning to return.

It warned that returning water can “look cloudy or brown” due to “naturally occurring iron and manganese deposits in pipes” which are “harmless”.

Customers are advised to run the cold tap until it is clear.

Supplies were restored yesterday evening.

A spokesperson for South East Water said yesterday: “We’re sorry to all customers in the Eastbourne area who may have been impacted by water supply issues.

“We initially suspected a burst water main was the cause of the issue, which affected up to 2,500 properties in the Hampden Park area.

“We have since carried out valve operations at a nearby site, which has resolved the issue, with water now returning to customers’ taps. However, customers on higher ground will experience a longer delay. We anticipate that all customers will have their water returned by this evening.
