A sports media organisation run by students at a university has secured two national accolades.
Purple Panthers Sports Network operates from the University of Brighton and is overseen by sports journalism students. The group was honoured at the National Association of Student Television Awards 2026 for its committed and innovative work in student media.
The outfit achieved Gold status in the Tim Marshall Award section, while PPSN president Noah Mitchell collected Bronze in the On-Screen Talent division.
According to Noah, winning the special recognition gold at this year’s NaSTAs came as a tremendous shock and proved deeply humbling, reflecting the extensive effort invested throughout the year. He noted that competition proved fiercer than in previous years, making any victory entirely unexpected. The On-Screen Talent honour came as the greatest surprise. Upon seeing his name appear on screen, he experienced complete disbelief. Collaborating with some of his closest companions had been an extraordinary journey, and he acknowledged he could not have accomplished any of it without their support, expressing hope that the achievement would encourage others to participate and contribute to PPSN’s continued growth.
PPSN operates as a student-run media operation delivering coverage of university and external sports teams, producing live match broadcasts, player interviews and bespoke sports reporting content.
The platform provides practical experience for sports journalism students enrolled at the University of Brighton’s School of Art and Media.
PPSN vice president William Munt explained that the organisation had boosted self-assurance, particularly regarding approaching individuals, appearing on camera and overall professional growth as a journalist. He observed that when studying and planning a post-graduation career, students seek elements distinguishing their work. Demonstrating initiative and genuine dedication matters significantly, and PPSN had offered precisely that chance.
PPSN also recently achieved national acclaim at the NCTJ Awards for Excellence 2026, receiving a commendation for Innovation of the Year.
This marks the third occasion in eight years that the University of Brighton has secured recognition at national student journalism awards, illustrating its growing footprint in student media and journalism.
