An illegal campsite has been set up at a seaside location for almost a week, despite officials threatening to take the matter to court.

Motorhomes first arrived at Goring Gap in Worthing on Friday 10 April.

Sussex Police have confirmed that officers attended the unsanctioned site and said the force is coordinating with West Sussex County Council to handle the situation.

The council revealed on Monday that an eviction notice has been handed out.

A council spokesperson said the authority is conscious of the unlawful camp at Goring Gap. A directive to vacate the area has been issued and court action will be initiated in due course. The council will keep observing the location together with Sussex Police and Adur and Worthing District Council.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said on Saturday that officers were alerted to the unlawful camp at Goring Gap, Marine Drive, Goring on Friday 10 April.

Officers have gone to the spot and are liaising closely with West Sussex County Council to keep track of developments. Members of the public should flag any criminal activity or unusual behaviour to the force via its website or by phoning 101. In an emergency, always dial 999.
