Biodiversity-boosting microbrewery faces closure threat

Published on

A community interest company operating as a microbrewery could shut down if additional financial support isn’t secured from the public.

Old Tree Brewery, situated in Glynde and recognized for beverages crafted from foraged ingredients, has achieved 95 percent of its crowdfunding goal with only five days remaining in the campaign.

Donations currently total £47,918 against the £50,000 objective.

The Old Tree team previously provided beverages to Silo prior to the restaurant’s relocation to London. The brewery functions as a non-profit organization.

The business has maintained operations in the Brighton region for more than 13 years, concentrating on soil health, permaculture practices, foraging activities, zero-waste manufacturing methods and fermentation experiments.

According to Old Tree, its brewers, agricultural workers and local supporters are collaborating to rehabilitate soil quality and enhance British biodiversity through the establishment of edible hedgerows and production of active compost for community agricultural projects.

Their product lineup features kombuchas prepared with wild components including oak leaves and birch sap.

The fundraising campaign receives support from the Communities Fund, which will double any contribution up to £250 per individual donation.

The brewery is also providing backers with incentives such as their signature seasonal beverage delivery service offered quarterly.

The establishment has earned recognition on Tripadvisor, holding a five-star rating.

Jennifer Murphy remarked: “The kombucha tastes incredible.”

Oliver Barnes stated: “The best kombucha you’ll taste.”
