Reform UK’s leader has pledged to promote as many flags as possible should his party succeed in the forthcoming election.

Nigel Farage travelled to Crowborough on April 15 as part of the party’s campaign efforts ahead of local elections scheduled for May.

Crowborough has drawn nationwide focus after the Home Office transformed a former military facility in the vicinity to accommodate over 500 male asylum seekers.

This appearance occurred shortly after a Reform event held at the South of England Showground near Ardingly on March 25.

During his time there, Farage conveyed significant understanding for local people, indicating that were he living in Crowborough, he would be deeply worried, and noting that occupants there are permitted to roam the streets freely.

The tour of Crowborough enabled Farage to engage with local residents and party candidates, while also responding to questions from regional and national media representatives.

The Clacton MP was also captured on camera outside the entrance to the housing facility.

Motorists expressed approval by sounding their vehicle horns, while certain individuals yelled offensive comments from their cars.

Speaking to The Argus, Farage discussed the proliferation of unofficial Union and St George’s flags adorning lampposts and communal spaces across several towns.

Locations such as Brighton, Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven experienced repeated flag displays throughout the summer months, though activity tailed off considerably during colder weather.

East Sussex County Council revealed that £16,288 had been allocated for flag removal by January 12, following a Freedom of Information request lodged by former councillor Sean Macleod, with the total probably exceeding that figure by now.

When confronted with the argument that the flags cause division, Farage described the movement as magnificent.

He stated that should the national flag plant seeds of discord, the country would be in more trouble than he realised, and that should Reform secure the council, they would foster as many of these flags as possible.

He continued by saying it is truly remarkable that certain sections of local government appear to contain individuals who harbour resentment towards the nation, its heritage, and wish to see it dismantled and transformed into something unrecognisable, and that is not something Reform will accept.

On October 4 last year, an external fire was ignited at a mosque situated on Phyllis Avenue in Peacehaven. Two occupants inside the building escaped unharmed.

When questioned regarding this incident and escalating concerns within the Muslim community, Farage highlighted the anxiety experienced by Jewish communities.

He responded by asking whether if certain Muslim communities live in apprehension, what about Jewish communities, noting another arson incident that day in North London, and stating that this represents the genuine issue. He said no individual should face assault anywhere under any circumstances, yet it appears with the Jewish community this is becoming increasingly frequent.

The party leader was subsequently asked to address rising friction between Palestinian activists and Brighton’s Jewish residents, specifically the repeated defacement of the October 7 memorial in the city and recent doorstep campaigns by activists urging householders to shun Israeli businesses.

He replied that this question should be directed to the Green party, as they are spearheading this campaign, not merely against Israel but against Zionism, and one can observe where the boundaries are shifting. He suggested they are perilously close to claiming the Greens are campaigning against Jewish people, not the traditional Green party which under Caroline Lucas would not have behaved in this manner, but a new faction within the Green party is introducing these national discussions in an extremely hazardous direction.

When questioned about measures to foster improved community relations, Farage stated that the law must be enforced uniformly.

He elaborated that should he stroll down the High Street chanting slogans deemed offensive, he would be taken into custody, yet they have witnessed demonstrations in major cities recently endorsing the Mullahs and the existing Iranian administration. He noted they have observed marches where individuals have uttered antisemitic slogans tantamount to advocating not merely the elimination of the state of Israel, but the annihilation of all its inhabitants, meaning the law must be applied consistently, which has not been occurring.

Farage identified himself as a strong proponent of free expression while accepting that boundaries do exist.
