A traditional craft in Sussex, considered critically endangered, may soon see a revival.
The Sussex trug, a basket with a history spanning nearly two centuries, is facing extinction.
Now, with fewer than ten people left working in the industry, most of who are part-time, the craft is at a critical juncture.
The price of sweet chestnut wood, used for handles and rims, rose by 600 per cent in 2024, adding financial strain to the already struggling industry.
Similarly, the cricket bat willow used for the boards is in high demand globally, diverting offcuts to international markets and causing prices to soar.
An ageing skills base, along with these challenges, has been threatening the survival of the Sussex trug.
However, a plan to revive the industry is now taking shape.
A veteran of the industry for 43 years, Robin Tuppen, is set to breathe new life into the craft through the creation of the Sussex Trug Heritage Centre.
The not-for-profit company aims to serve as a national hub for endangered heritage crafts, with the Sussex trug at its heart.

The centre’s mission includes year-round teaching in purpose-built workshops, expert instruction and integrated stewardship, which combines woodland management, storytelling and public engagement.
By cultivating a fresh wave of makers, volunteers and enthusiasts, the centre hopes to ensure the survival of the trug industry.
The centre will also introduce a new website to bring the craft into the modern age.
Support for the project has come from the Basketmakers’ Association and Heritage Crafts, with more backing expected soon from the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has also shown interest and invited the centre to apply for Development Phase Funding.
As the project progresses, the Sussex Trug Heritage Centre is seeking experienced trustees to form a board and support Robin.
