A serious collision has taken place on the M23, with the northbound lanes shut between Junction 9 close to Gatwick Airport and Junction 10 at Crawley.

National Highways has announced that the M23 northbound between Junctions 9 and 10 is anticipated to stay shut for several hours because of the serious collision.
The M23 northbound is shut between J10 Crawley and J9 Gatwick Airport. This is because of a serious collision. Emergency services are in attendance. This is likely to be in place for several hours.
National Highways reported that the M23 in West Sussex is shut northbound between J10 Crawley and J9 London Gatwick Airport because of a serious single vehicle collision. Emergency services including Sussex Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance and supporting the emergency services with traffic management. Because of the serious nature of the collision, the road is anticipated to stay shut for several hours.
The AA traffic map shows that a car left the carriageway and hit a tree at around 5:15 this morning.
Information shows that substantial delays of more than one hour, and increasing, are impacting the M23 Northbound between J11 A23 Pease Pottage and J9 Gatwick Airport.
Sussex Police and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for further information about this incident.
The hold-ups are being made worse because one of the exit lanes at Junction 10 is shut for repair and construction work.
The M23 is at a standstill, with substantial congestion now stretching back to Pease Pottage.

Leave the M23 at J10 and take the third exit at the roundabout to travel eastbound on the A264.
Travel along the A264 until reaching the junction with the A22, then turn left onto the A22.
Continue on the A22 to M25 Junction 6 and join the M25.
Travel clockwise on the M25 to Junction 7 to rejoin the M23 and continue your journey.
Some vehicles appear to be returning to the exit after becoming stuck further ahead.

The AA has reported that it was a single vehicle crash, although this has not been confirmed by police or fire and rescue services.
The shut section of the M23 next to Gatwick Airport as the Easter weekend approaches is causing substantial delays with long traffic queues.

The M23 northbound between J10 and J9 will stay shut throughout the morning. There are delays of 70 minutes above normal journey time and 4 miles of congestion.

Sussex Police have confirmed that a 23-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car has died in the collision.
A 23-year-old male passenger has also suffered serious injuries.
The car’s driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Substantial delays
There are substantial delays of 68 minutes on the M23 northbound between J11 A23 Pease Pottage and J9 Gatwick Airport. Average speed is five mph.
The road reopened at 18:05 but there is still stop-start traffic.
The M23 in West Sussex has reopened northbound between J10 Crawley and J9 Gatwick following an earlier collision.
