A gold 50p piece honouring a famous Sussex story for children is available for purchase at prices exceeding £2,000.
The Royal Mint has issued a golden 50p featuring Winnie the Pooh – a character created in the woodlands and countryside of East Sussex – to commemorate 100 years since A.A. Milne’s beloved tales first appeared.
With a price tag of £2,420, only 100 of these coins have been manufactured, making this one of the most coveted special releases the Mint has offered in recent memory.
Milne authored the original Winnie-the-Pooh, released in 1926, at Cotchford Farm in Hartfield, East Sussex, where he had relocated the previous year as a rural escape.
The Hundred Acre Wood depicted in the stories draws direct inspiration from Ashdown Forest, which continues to span across the East Sussex countryside today. The Poohsticks bridge – where Christopher Robin played the game Milne immortalised in print – remains just a brief walk from the village of Hartfield.
To observe the centenary, the Royal Mint has collaborated with Disney to create three gold pieces throughout 2026, each representing a value central to the narratives.
The inaugural coin, showing Pooh carrying flowers beneath the trees of the Hundred Acre Wood, embodies Kindness and was released in February. Loyalty, depicting Pooh and Christopher Robin, arrives in April, with Friendship – featuring Pooh alongside Tigger and Eeyore – scheduled for June.
For those without such substantial sums to invest, identical designs exist in more budget-friendly varieties. A standard cupro-nickel brilliant uncirculated 50p can be purchased for £15, while a coloured edition costs £25. A sterling silver proof version, restricted to 4,000 pieces, sells for £92.50.
The coins are not the Royal Mint’s inaugural Winnie the Pooh series. Between 2020 and 2022, the Mint issued a nine-piece collection based on E.H. Shepard’s original artwork, showcasing characters such as Piglet, Tigger, Owl, Eeyore, and Kanga and Roo.
Those gold proof versions – produced in quantities as few as 160 – have since experienced significant value increases on the resale market. The inaugural piece in that series, a 2020 gold proof of Pooh by himself, now commands prices approaching £3,000 with professional authentication, compared to its original retail price of approximately £1,125.
Ashdown Forest itself is commemorating the centenary through a major cultural initiative titled The Big One Hundred, which commenced in January 2026 and encompasses a fresh narrative set within the forest.
The timing of the Royal Mint’s centenary collection holds particular importance for collectors. Under British copyright legislation, Milne’s original Winnie the Pooh tales will enter the public domain on 1 January 2027, 70 years following his passing in 1956.
Disney’s registered trademarks will persist, though this year’s coins may prove among the final offerings of their variety – a concluding chapter for the Sussex bear’s official collectible legacy, rendered in gold.
