Families discover lambing season at countryside farm attraction

Published on

The annual lambing event at a West Sussex farm has returned for its 47th successive year, drawing visitors to witness the springtime spectacle.

The inaugural arrivals appeared on March 12 at Coombes Farm near Lancing, following what proprietor Jenny Flake characterised as a tardy beginning to proceedings.

Jenny first invited members of the public onto her farm 45 years ago. Her offspring Andrew, who is 32 years of age, currently oversees day-to-day operations.

The Flake family has retained ownership of the property since 1901, with Andrew constituting the fifth generation to cultivate the land.

Public access commenced on March 14 and will remain available until April 19.

According to Jenny, the pace was sluggish initially before the births suddenly accelerated.

Every expectant mother undergoes veterinary examination to establish their lambing prospects.

This particular season has seen 800 expectant ewes gathered at the farm, with total births anticipated to exceed 1,200. One hundred mothers have already delivered, including several sets of twins and triplets.

The family receives assistance from agricultural staff, veterinary trainees, and unpaid helpers throughout the period. Personnel maintain continuous presence on the premises throughout the entire lambing window.

Andrew remarked that the team holds particular affection for this time of year, describing it as an enchanting and wonderful phenomenon marking fresh arrivals into existence.

He continued that sharing the experience with visitors brings considerable satisfaction, noting that numerous attendees have never witnessed any kind of birth before and can observe both farming methods and the contentment of the animals.

Discussing the demanding nature of the work, Andrew observed that inclement conditions and extended shifts present difficulties, that the schedule remains relentless and hectic, requiring simultaneous presence in multiple locations, though he views these pressures as rewarding.

The farm maintains daily public opening hours until April 19, with tractor transportation offered to carry guests up the Downs where they can observe the flocks grazing in the open fields.
