What we know so far
The Chichester Bypass section of the A27 is impassable in both lanes between the A259 at the Bognor Road Roundabout junction and the A285 at Portfield Roundabout.
Significant congestion has built up throughout the vicinity.
The AA reports queuing traffic between the A285 Halnaker and Petworth junction and the A259 Bognor Road Roundabout. Additional hold-ups are being experienced at the Bognor Road Roundabout heading eastbound, stretching from the A27 Chichester Bypass at the Whyke Roundabout through to the A27 at Oving Crossroads.
Both Sussex Police and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for additional details.

According to the AA, while the physical barrier appears to have been removed, vehicle volumes remain high in the surrounding area.
Fire service comment
A representative from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the emergency call was received at 11.50am regarding a small vehicle fire on the A27 Chichester Bypass. Joint Fire Control dispatched two fire engines to the location. On arrival, crews discovered a car completely ablaze. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus tackled the flames using a high pressure hose reel. Crews departed the scene at 12.48pm. The carriageway remains shut and members of the public are being told to steer clear.
Sussex Police have confirmed they are working alongside the fire service and council highways department to manage the temporary road closures.
One lane remains shut
Vehicle recovery and clearance operations are still under way, leaving one lane restricted.
Traffic delays
The AA continues to report substantial queuing along the affected stretch.
Motorists should anticipate growing hold-ups on Portfield Roundabout heading westbound between the A27 main route and A27 Chichester Bypass.
