An initiative has launched to prevent the use of plastic pellets in wastewater treatment following a significant coastal contamination event.
Helena Dollimore, the parliamentarian for Hastings and Rye, delivered a petition to the House of Commons on Wednesday, March 18 calling for a ban on these particles.
The previous November, countless bio-beads gathered on the beach at Camber Sands after a filtering system malfunctioned at Southern Water’s treatment works in Eastbourne.
The tiny spheres were also identified at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, where the Sussex Wildlife Trust voiced serious concerns about the devastating impact on the fragile saltmarsh habitat and its wildlife, as well as areas further down the southern coast.
These minuscule plastic balls create hazards when ingested by birds, marine animals and mammals that mistake them for nourishment.
Experts from King’s College London established that the beads contain lead and arsenic alongside other toxic materials.
The petition secured 9,915 signatures.
Henri Brocklebank, conservation director at the Sussex Wildlife Trust, described how Rye Harbour Nature Reserve holds worldwide importance for avian populations, with animals travelling enormous distances to feed and breed there.
He pointed out that bio-beads are small and float easily, mimicking numerous food items these birds actively seek.
While the impacts of bioplastics accumulating in digestive systems are thoroughly documented, the ramifications of potential contaminants being released within the acidic stomachs of these animals stay largely unknown.
Brocklebank emphasised that removing bio-beads from the environment is critical, although he expressed concern that generations to come will keep finding them for many years.
He maintained that the only definitive approach to stop future bio-bead discharges is to stop using them at treatment works entirely, characterising them as outdated technology that must be urgently phased out.
A Southern Water representative stated that bio-beads were the most sophisticated solution available when facilities such as Eastbourne were built during the 1990s in regions previously without any sewage treatment capability.
The firm indicated that newer installations utilise different techniques to achieve identical results.
At present, five of the organisation’s 367 treatment facilities still employ bio-beads, and they are partnering with Defra on options for upgrading these locations.
The representative observed that sites like Eastbourne often have insufficient space for erecting new installations, meaning alterations to the existing underground infrastructure would require considerable investment and regulatory approval.
