A disused structure once serving as a police facility could be turned into a family home after plans were lodged with the council.
HGP Developments Ltd has submitted proposals to convert the small building situated at the top end of Stanford Avenue in Brighton into a two-storey residence.
The application describes the police box as having been abandoned and no longer serving any purpose for a considerable time.
Official documents indicate the structure was erected roughly 75 years prior and functioned as an outpost for officers on their beats.
The location sits between a business establishment along Ditchling Road and a nursery on Stanford Avenue.
Previously, during January 2008, consent was awarded to convert the structure into a dwelling, though the scheme was never carried out.
The current submission aims to enlarge the aging building into a single two-storey home, incorporating outdoor space, bin storage, and bicycle facilities.
To achieve this, the existing police box would be widened at the front and raised by one floor.
The ground level would contain a kitchen and dining zone, a distinct living space, and an extra lavatory.
Upstairs, occupants would have access to two sleeping quarters and a separate bathing facility. The main frontage would include a Juliette balcony.
The property would also feature a level roof capable of supporting solar panels.
The outside area behind and to the north of the dwelling would include a locked area for storing two bicycles and an air source heat pump affixed to the northern side.
Bins and recycling containers would be housed at the front of the plot.
The application argues that the structure’s dimensions and proportions make it unsuitable for continued commercial use, and that converting and enlarging it into a home represents the most practical option for the space.
With a total internal floor area of 70.8 square metres, the proposed residence satisfies national space requirements for a two-bedroom property accommodating three people across two levels.
The application carries the reference BH2026/00366.
