Investigation after oil spill pollutes lake in Horsham

Published on

A probe has been launched following an oil leak that contaminated a lake, threatening local wildlife.

The pollution was initially reported on March 16 at a lake situated on Newells Lane in Horsham, which contains a small commercial fishing business.

Fishery proprietor Andrew Bailey confirmed that the Environment Agency was examining the leak but had yet to identify where it originated.

He noted that the agency had been cooperative, with field staff carrying out their duties effectively and canvassing local properties. He expressed hope that whoever was responsible would come forward voluntarily. The source might be unaware of the problem, though a pipe could require excavation and replacement work.

Photographs of the lake display absorbent materials positioned on the water surface to absorb the oil.

While the Environment Agency supplied some of these materials, Mr Bailey stated he had to purchase additional supplies himself.

The animal welfare organisation Horsham Wildlife Rescue is currently treating a duck injured in the incident, though it cautioned that other creatures may have suffered harm.

A representative from the group explained that ducklings would probably begin using the pond once they had hatched. Spawn in the settlement tank had been ruined and amphibians probably perished from the contamination. Roe deer and other fauna frequent the stock pond for drinking.

Mr Bailey, who relies entirely on the fishery for his livelihood, warned that damages could reach thousands of pounds should his fish stocks be injured or lost.

He suspected heating oil or paraffin escaping from a neighbouring residence was the likely origin.

An Environment Agency representative stated that officers had swiftly responded to reports on 16 March and promptly deployed specialist resources to contain the pollutant within the affected lake. The agency was collaborating with householders and landowners while inquiries continued to trace the origin. All viable leads were being pursued, and residents with oil storage tanks were advised to verify their condition. Those with relevant information were asked to ring the incident hotline on 0800807060.
