A council area in Sussex is set to benefit from almost four million pounds in new funding to construct and enhance flood protection measures following a government announcement.
The allocation will support work in Adur and Worthing as part of a broader 830 million pound initiative throughout England.
The Environment Agency revealed the funding, which forms part of a historic commitment, with a minimum of 10.5 billion pounds pledged between 2024 and 2036.
Almost 1.8 million pounds will be directed toward upgrading Worthing’s Capital Maintenance Project to safeguard against tidal flooding.
Adur will obtain 2.1 million pounds to fund improvements to coastal defences serving Shoreham and Lancing, including the Western Harbour Arm Flood Defence scheme and the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls project.
Tom Rutland, the MP representing East Worthing and Shoreham, stated that flooding has created significant concern and inconvenience for residents and enterprises in the area, making the reinforcement of local protections absolutely vital.
He added that this allocation from the Labour administration would have a substantial impact by helping to secure properties, assist local companies, and provide the community with the security it deserves.
He indicated he would maintain close collaboration with the Environment Agency and local stakeholders to guarantee that Adur and Worthing receive the robust flood protection required both presently and in subsequent years.
Significant funding has also been confirmed for other parts of Sussex.
Among the largest allocations is eight million pounds made available to address coastal erosion at Elmer Beach, situated between Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.
An additional 8.1 million pounds will be spent on the Brighton Marina to River Adur Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management initiative, covering locations across East and West Sussex.
More than 600 schemes throughout the United Kingdom will receive support during 2026/27, encompassing major flood barriers, reinforced embankments and beach management schemes.
The programme will also encompass repairs to defences that sustained damage during Storms Goretti and Chandra.
