Petworth named among UK’s best places to live by The Sunday Times

A community in Sussex featured on The Sunday Times’ compilation of the nation’s most desirable locations to reside possesses a charming historic centre.

The publication announced its rankings for the finest residential spots across Britain, with 72 districts chosen according to panellist ratings covering six criteria, including cultural offerings, educational institutions, transportation links and internet connectivity.

Sponsored by Lloyds Bank, the catalogue highlighted numerous Sussex and Kent settlements within commuting distance of the capital, with Petworth appearing alongside St Leonards on the roster.

The South Downs’ scenic landscape surrounding Petworth contributed to its inclusion, together with the impressive Petworth House, which the National Trust now maintains.

The publication described Petworth as a perfect destination for those seeking to escape modern pressures and experience traditional living, aimed at prospective buyers who could afford the property market.

Rightmove data indicates properties in Petworth fetched an average price of £722,763 over the previous twelve months.

The area features independent retailers and enterprises alongside its picturesque historic atmosphere. Its cobblestone lanes and buildings adorned with wisteria complement the numerous antique establishments that contribute to the district’s timeless character.

However, among the most notable features of residing in Petworth is the welcoming community atmosphere and flourishing artistic community that The Sunday Times evaluators also recognised.

The settlement lies approximately 90 minutes from the capital by road.

The area, characterised by its vintage stores, specialist shops and structures originating from the 1600s, had previously received The Sunday Times’ designation as the premier residential location in the south-eastern region.

Petworth House stands as one of the district’s most distinguished heritage properties under National Trust stewardship.

Often described as resembling a small French palace set within England, the estate’s origins span over nine centuries, with the existing manor house constructed during the 1600s following renovations.

The property featured in the initial series of the Netflix historical production Bridgerton.

The residence houses an exceptional collection of artwork, including works by Turner, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Gainsborough, alongside detailed woodcarvings crafted by Grinling Gibbons.

The grounds encompass 700 acres of expansive countryside and shelter one of the country’s longest-established fallow deer populations.

Petworth contains numerous additional heritage structures that reflect the settlement’s longstanding association with the estate and its workforce.

Mrs Cummings’s Cottage, formerly residence of a seamstress working at Petworth House, now operates as a modest heritage centre preserved to resemble its 1910 appearance, providing insight into domestic routines from the early twentieth century.

Coultershaw lies to the south of the settlement, previously hosting a toll road and grinding mill, where an 18th-century mechanism previously provided water to Petworth House and the broader population; fragments of the former waterway and storage buildings remain observable.

St Mary’s Church, situated adjacent to the Servants’ Quarters, represents another point of interest, historically recognised for its bent spire, commemorated in the local verse expressing pride in Petworth alongside observations about the congregation and the church’s distinctive tower, and for its exclusive Wyndham family gallery overlooking the central nave.

Motorists can reach Petworth by travelling south from London via the A3 or A24 before joining the A283, which leads directly into the town.

Those using rail services can board a Southern Railway departure from London Victoria to the nearby Pulborough station.
