Eastbourne Borough Council has approved a proposal aimed at improving pavement safety and accessibility.
All members supported the initiative, urging East Sussex County Council—the authority overseeing roads and footpaths—to carry out a comprehensive review of pavement conditions.
The proposal seeks an approach prioritising fairness to guarantee accessibility upgrades benefit every community, not solely the town centre.
Councillor Teri Sayers-Cooper put forward the initiative and stressed the necessity for infrastructure that works for everyone, while also voicing worries expressed by residents who rely on mobility scooters and walking aids.
Cllr Sayers-Cooper, who serves as the town’s Disability Champion, stated that secure pavements represent essential infrastructure rather than an optional extra, determining whether individuals can venture out independently.
When residents are compelled to use the road because pavements present hazards or barriers, true equality cannot exist.
Ensuring proper conditions for disabled individuals ultimately means ensuring proper conditions for everyone—including senior residents, parents with prams, carers, and the broader population.
During the gathering, Mr Storey spoke to members about the dangers he encounters when making his way to the local shop, pointing to cracked surfaces and absent lowered kerbs.
