A man attacked a woman sexually in Brighton following a funeral reception.

Brighton Crown Court was told that George Woolgar-Brown made his way into the woman’s bedroom and onto her bed and carried out a sexual assault.

The jury heard that the 30-year-old had been staying at the victim’s home after the wake.

The victim, who must remain anonymous for legal purposes, recounted how she was shocked and how she froze, and outlined the continuing effect the attack has had on her life.

Directly following the sexual assault she departed the room, while Woolgar-Brown departed the property.

Woolgar-Brown, from Lyminster Avenue in Brighton, faced trial at Brighton Crown Court and was convicted on August 13 of sexual assault by penetration.

He was held in custody to appear before the court again on November 6.

The allegation concerned an offence that occurred some time ago in Brighton.

Following the trial, Detective Constable Elaine Welsh stated that she wished to praise the victim for having the courage to report her experience to police and expressed gratitude to the witnesses who assisted with their investigation.

She noted that Sussex Police treats reports of sexual assault with the utmost gravity, and that combating violence against women and girls represents a key focus for the force.

She added that officers were committed to securing justice for the victim in this matter, and that Woolgar-Brown would now face sentencing.
