A lithium-ion battery from an electric bicycle that had been left plugged in triggered a significant blaze at a residence.

The incident occurred at a property on Charlock Close in Crawley on Wednesday, June 17.

Emergency services received numerous 999 calls, prompting a response from eight fire crews drawn from both West Sussex and Surrey.

Adrian Carter, who serves as area manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, explained that the fire spread rapidly and resulted in extensive destruction across the whole building. He noted that although the flames remained confined to the property where they originated, surrounding homes experienced damage from smoke.

South East Coast Ambulance Service attended to one individual at the location, providing treatment for breathing in smoke and minor burn injuries.

Firefighters managed to bring four canine pets to safety from the property, though one feline did not survive.

Investigators have determined the blaze began in the living room after an e-bike battery was left charging.

Carter highlighted the severe hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, which power devices such as electric bicycles, electronic cigarettes and smartphones. He pointed out that these batteries become extremely dangerous when subjected to overcharging, electrical faults, water exposure or physical damage.

He recommended that individuals avoid plugging in large lithium-ion batteries in corridors or staircases, areas where they could obstruct emergency exit routes.
