Brighton named UK’s fifth most sustainable city by consultancy

Published on

Brighton has secured a place among the United Kingdom’s five most sustainable urban areas, receiving commendation for its circular economy initiatives.

Carbon Neutral Group, a prominent British sustainability consultancy, published the list using criteria such as infrastructure quality, access to parks and green areas, and levels of pollution and carbon output, alongside polling that examined how metropolitan residents commute.

George Curtis, the chief executive of Carbon Neutral Group, expressed that witnessing local authorities prioritising environmental responsibility was encouraging. He noted that this approach provided opportunities for the city to demonstrate its capabilities while enabling inhabitants to support sustainability goals through measures like commuting by bicycle or utilizing eco-conscious working environments.

The coastal destination earned recognition for its sustainable water management approach, implementation of circular economy principles and emphasis on restoration and maintenance projects.

These measures have enabled the city to minimise waste from building projects, food production and water usage, while its flourishing pre-owned retail industry has further strengthened its environmental standing.

Mr Curtis observed that these urban areas shared several characteristics, including ambitious 2030 net-zero commitments, extensive public green spaces and notable investment in cycling routes and electric vehicle facilities.

Cambridge topped the assessment, with Exeter, Bristol and Edinburgh filling the subsequent positions.

Cambridge distinguished itself through its environmental policies and energy-conscious infrastructure development.
