A firefighter from West Sussex is undertaking an endurance running challenge to honour his father who died recently.

Dan Game, who lives in Horsham but grew up in Billingshurst and Rudgwick, is covering 270 kilometres across 27 consecutive days to collect money for Mountbatten Isle of Wight.

The hospice provided care for his father John Game and stepmother Linda before their deaths.

The fundraising effort started on the first day of September.

Each day involves completing a ten-kilometre distance, with the final run scheduled to fall on his father’s birthday.

According to Mr Game, his father would have considered the undertaking excessive.

He explained that his father would have suggested alternative fundraising methods, but he prefers undertaking difficult physical goals.

Mr Game praised the Mountbatten team who supported his father during his final period.

His father had expressed a wish to remain at home, and the staff ensured this was possible by arranging all necessary equipment and comfort measures.

They provided compassionate and dedicated attention throughout.

The majority of Mr Game’s daily runs will be incorporated around his duties at the fire service and regular walks with his dog.

He intends to complete the challenge by participating in the Run Barns Green ten-kilometre event on September 27, accompanied by supporters.

Donations totaling almost 700 pounds have already been received, with a target of 2,700 pounds set for the campaign.

This represents not his first experience with charitable athletic events, having previously finished a marathon for a cause.

The organisation receives the majority of its operating funds through charitable donations, grant awards, its chain of retail shops and various fundraising initiatives.

Approximately 85 percent of the hospice’s services are delivered directly to patients within their own residences, including the support given to Mr Game’s father and stepmother.

The facility serves as the sole hospice operation on the island and maintains continuous availability for specialist palliative services for those requiring such care.
