A competitor from West Sussex has claimed the Foundation National Champion title at the Hoof Boot Shop National Championships.

Kathy Felgate, based in Ifold, secured victory in the 20km Foundation Novice category during the endurance competition hosted at Rushford Hall in Norfolk on August 15.

The achievement was accomplished aboard her 13-year-old Arab mare, Strinesdale Tranquility, called Gracie, marking a remarkable milestone after just two years of participation in the discipline.

According to Felgate, their development began at a gradual pace during the previous year.

She noted that Gracie’s tendency toward anxiety combined with her own concerns about overnight events created some initial obstacles to progress.

However, with substantial backing from her support network, particularly Caroline Ingham, she made the decision to pursue the championship opportunity seriously this season.

Felgate expressed satisfaction with this choice, observing that Gracie demonstrated considerable improvement throughout the year.

Prior to claiming the national title, the pair had demonstrated consistent advancement throughout the competitive calendar.

Results included a third-place finish at Polesden Lacey, followed by a runner-up position at the South Downs area qualifiers and another third-place result at the Cirencester Inter-Regionals.

Felgate characterised Gracie as an exceptionally gentle and well-mannered animal, describing her as the most courteous equine she had ever owned.

She also acknowledged the welcoming nature of the endurance sporting community, noting its reputation for inclusivity and mutual assistance.

According to Felgate, competitors experiencing uncertainty or difficulty during events consistently find willing volunteers offering guidance and support.

The duo will now carry the West Sussex banner at the Club Championships, scheduled to take place during the Red Dragon Festival of Endurance in Wales.
