An innovative collaboration between two educational institutions in Brighton is enabling adult learners to pursue professional counselling qualifications through an accelerated programme.
The University of Brighton and Varndean College have extended their existing relationship to establish a streamlined pathway for students seeking careers in therapeutic counselling within the local area.
Commencing in September, approximately fifty individuals registered for the Therapeutic Counselling programme at Varndean College will receive instruction at the university’s Moulsecoomb site.
According to Dr Megha Rajguru from the University of Brighton, the institutions have developed a coordinated educational route that retains skilled individuals in Brighton while accelerating their entry into professionally rewarding counselling positions that serve local communities.
The new programme provides a faster track towards the university’s Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Instruction continues to be delivered by Varndean College tutors, though learners gain access to university facilities and academic environments.
This arrangement aims to develop self-assurance and ready participants for advanced academic study and professional qualification programmes.
The initiative responds to increasing national requirements for registered counselling practitioners.
Lisa Watkin-Stevens, vice principal responsible for student matters at Varndean College, explained that the collaboration enhances educational progression opportunities for mature students, supporting capability development and establishing straightforward connections to university-level programmes.
Access to university campuses and learning spaces offers participants an improved educational experience that connects further and higher education sectors.
Learners gain understanding of academic institutions, interact with fellow students and industry practitioners, and develop the assurance required to advance to more senior programmes.
The arrangement also supports the university’s wider community engagement activities, which provided over four hundred thirty events throughout Brighton and Sussex during the previous twelve months to assist both younger and older residents in exploring higher education possibilities.
According to Ms Watkin-Stevens, a primary objective involves expanding access for adult students from various communities, including those who may not previously have contemplated university study, to obtain counselling education and professional credentials.
With a ninety-five percent transition rate from the ten-week preliminary course to the Level Four Diploma in Counselling qualification, expectations indicate the collaboration will expand further, facilitating successful entry into university study and professional counselling employment.
