Sussex animal beatings rise 39% as kitten rescued with fractured skull and tail

Published on

The number of animal cruelty reports in Sussex has increased dramatically, according to fresh data released by animal welfare organisations.

The rise in intentional violence directed at domestic animals has prompted concern among welfare advocates.

A young cat named Luna was extracted from a residence in East Sussex following alerts from a local resident regarding her wellbeing and that of another feline, which had already passed away in unclear circumstances.

The four-month-old kitten was discovered suffering from what veterinarians suspect was a fractured skull, along with a head tilt and a broken tail, with injuries deemed consistent with deliberate physical harm.

Luna survived after receiving emergency treatment and has subsequently been placed in a new home.

The cat’s owner subsequently entered guilty pleas to two charges under the Animal Welfare Act.

This incident forms part of a broader pattern identified in annual figures compiled by the RSPCA.

In East Sussex alone, 276 reports of animals being beaten were recorded during 2023, representing a 39 percent increase when measured against 2021 figures.

West Sussex documented 213 comparable incidents across the same timeframe, a rise of 32 percent.

Across England and Wales, the RSPCA processed 16,033 reports of animal beatings throughout the previous year.

Jo Hirst, a superintendent at the RSPCA, noted the profound distress caused by such a significant surge in reports of deliberate beatings, with one complaint reaching the charity’s cruelty hotline approximately every fifteen minutes.

The organisation has cautioned that companion animals face elevated risks of harm during the summer season.
