Nusrat Ghani MP visits Hailsham charity Medi Tech Trust, praises global medical donations

A parliamentarian has expressed admiration for a charitable organisation dedicated to assisting communities across the United Kingdom and internationally.

Nusrat Ghani, representing Sussex Weald in the House of Commons, toured the facilities of Medi Tech Trust, an organisation based in Hailsham.

During the visit, the elected representative met with trustees and volunteers while learning about current projects undertaken by the group.

The organisation specialises in the collection and redistribution of surplus medical apparatus to disadvantaged populations, operating both within the local region and across international borders.

Speaking about the charity’s contributions, Ms Ghani noted the remarkable nature of its operations, which extend from Sussex to foreign destinations.

She serves as a patron of the organisation.

Medi Tech Trust originated more than two decades ago as an initiative to raise funds for laser equipment at Eastbourne Hospital.

The group has since expanded significantly, providing equipment and services valued in excess of one million pounds throughout Sussex and additional territories.

Currently, the charity maintains an extensive international operation, supplying apparatus and expertise to regions in Africa, Asia and conflict-affected areas, notably Ukraine.

During a routine meeting with the charity, Ms Ghani received information regarding recent activities.

These include the provision of ten lifting chairs to recipients throughout East Sussex.

Contributions from supporters are dispatched to Ukraine on a fortnightly basis, encompassing bandages, wheelchairs and other essential medical supplies.

The organisation recently distributed ten lifting chairs across the county and dispatched sixteen complete shipping containers of medical donations to international destinations during the previous year.

Assistance to Ukraine involves weekly van deliveries comprising bandages, dressings, wheelchairs, beds and additional medical equipment.

Medi Tech Trust received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2021 in recognition of its achievements.

Ms Ghani additionally endorsed the charity’s advocacy for legislative measures regarding the repurposing of surplus medical equipment.

She expressed support for the group’s campaign urging authorities and regulatory bodies to permit the utilisation of unused apparatus in further education institutions for clinical examination instruction.

The parliamentarian indicated that significant quantities of functional equipment are currently discarded, resulting in substantial costs for the National Health Service and public finances.

She noted that the organisation possesses the capability to safely convert equipment for educational purposes if appropriate permissions were granted.

Ms Ghani extended her appreciation to all staff and volunteers for their continued efforts in preserving life globally.
