A fatal incident occurred at a Christian music event in the Steyning area, resulting in the death of a 41-year-old Eastbourne resident.

Emergency services attended the scene after a large display structure collapsed at the venue on Washington Road.

Officers from Sussex constabulary received notification of the incident at approximately 3:38pm on August 28.

Investigators remained at the location the following day as part of ongoing inquiries and to support the coroner’s proceedings.

South East Coast Ambulance Service personnel assessed and treated five additional individuals at the scene.

Four of those patients required transportation to nearby medical facilities, with two sustaining serious injuries and two experiencing minor injuries.

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh expressed condolences to the family and acquaintances of the deceased, as well as to others impacted by the incident.

He noted that thousands of attendees were present at the venue during the afternoon and appealed for anyone possessing information or relevant recordings to provide these to investigators.
