A retired naval officer is preparing to complete a zip wire course in Brighton as part of his 93rd birthday celebrations.

Charles Wylie has built up an impressive record of adventurous challenges undertaken to mark previous birthdays.

At the age of 92, he descended the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth using abseiling techniques.

The previous year, at 91, he navigated Portsmouth Harbour in a transatlantic rowing vessel named Oardacious.

When he turned 90, he completed a parachute jump from an aircraft.

The retired officer is undertaking these challenges on behalf of his wife Jean, with whom he has shared 67 years of marriage.

She has been managing Alzheimer’s disease for more than 12 years.

The couple have nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren in their extended family.

Charles aims to increase public understanding of the condition while simultaneously collecting donations for research efforts directed at finding potential treatments.

He credits his willingness to tackle such demanding physical tasks to the experience gained during his service in the armed forces.

The Brighton zip wire event is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, with participants expected to be present from 1:30pm ahead of a 2pm departure time.
