West Sussex school crossing patrols to wear body cameras after trial success

Published on

School crossing patrol personnel in West Sussex will soon be equipped with body-worn cameras as part of a new safety initiative.

The programme follows reports of dangerous driving behaviour, vehicles failing to halt at pedestrian crossings and instances of verbal aggression directed at crossing patrol staff.

West Sussex County Council announced the rollout across selected locations following a successful trial period.

A four-week pilot scheme conducted at multiple schools earlier this year demonstrated a 50 per cent reduction in incidents where cameras were deployed.

The local authority stated that the devices would serve to safeguard employees, discourage reckless conduct and enhance pedestrian safety.

Recorded material may be utilised in police inquiries, though the council emphasised that the principal objective remains the prevention of anti-social conduct and improving safety conditions.

Councillor Erika Woodhurst-Trueman, whose portfolio includes highways and transport, acknowledged the valuable contribution made by school crossing patrol officers in facilitating safe road crossings daily.

She noted that all workers are entitled to conduct their duties without fear of harm, and the introduction of recording equipment would offer protection to staff while promoting more responsible driving.

The initiative would also support families in feeling secure about children walking to educational establishments.

Active modes of travel represent a significant element of public health strategies, traffic reduction efforts and the development of safer, more liveable communities.

The deployment strategy relies upon incident data to determine priority locations, with an annual review process intended to maximise the scheme’s effectiveness.

Councillor Sam Raby, cabinet member responsible for children, young people and learning, expressed the view that every child deserves a secure commute to and from school.

She stated that crossing patrol officers fulfil an essential function in ensuring young people arrive safely, and the cameras would provide additional protection and reassurance to parents while eliminating obstacles that might affect school attendance.

The programme forms part of broader measures by the council to enhance safety for both staff and residents.

Body cameras are additionally being extended to network compliance officers, who monitor activities on public highways to ensure adherence to safety standards and permit conditions.
