Guidelines published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence specify that patients classified as severely affected frequently find themselves unable to leave their residences, often experiencing heightened sensitivity to both light and sound, with many spending substantial portions of their days confined to bed.

Those presenting with very severe manifestations of the condition may experience additional complications including difficulty swallowing, necessitating tube feeding in certain cases, and remain bedridden throughout the day while dependent on others for their care needs.
