Bournefest postponed at last minute leaving customers furious over communication

Published on

A community music gathering in Eastbourne has faced backlash over the way its postponement was handled, with attendees expressing frustration about the level of information provided during the crisis.

Bournefest had been scheduled to proceed on the coastal promenade of the town on the final Saturday of August.

Representatives had confirmed to patrons the previous day that the occasion would continue as planned.

Nevertheless, at approximately two hours after midday on the day itself, those holding admission passes were notified that the commencement would be pushed back due to meteorological conditions.

Officials announced a further evaluation would occur later in the afternoon, with a view to commencing the gathering at five in the evening should circumstances permit.

The festival was ultimately deferred, with the public informed of this development shortly after the intended opening time.

Organisers committed to finding an alternative date while guaranteeing current tickets would be honored for the rescheduled event.

Attendees who had made considerable journeys or arranged accommodation following assurances the gathering would proceed voiced their displeasure at how the situation unfolded.

Social media responses to the postponement notices have since been disabled on the event’s official page.

Mark Budd condemned the communication standards and level of service provided, describing them as entirely unsatisfactory.

He expressed strong indignation regarding the manner in which the postponement had been managed.

Customers had invested considerable sums in tickets, travel arrangements, lodging and associated costs, yet the information provided fell far below acceptable standards.

Those attending events deserved prompt and proper notification when circumstances changed unexpectedly.

Instead, many felt abandoned without clear guidance about the situation or subsequent steps.

Martin Adams-Harris acknowledged the meteorological and safety considerations were beyond the organisers’ control and recognized the efforts of the team involved.

However, he emphasised that engagement with customers had fallen short of what was required.

Attendees simply sought regular updates throughout the day.

Several individuals had travelled significant distances while forecasts had clearly indicated problematic wind conditions.

Steve Mattocks noted that meteorological predictions had been available for nearly a week prior to the event.

Despite receiving reassurances the previous day and on the morning of the event itself, patrons received postponement notification only an hour after the most recent update.

Having walked for an extended period to reach the venue, he declared himself deeply unhappy with the outcome.

Rob Jarvis characterised the approach as a failure of communication management, noting there were appropriate methods for handling such circumstances and this had not been one of them.

Jacks Maria Howell accepted the safety justification yet maintained the information provided to attendees had been inadequate.

Visitors who had travelled considerable distances experienced prolonged uncertainty throughout the day.

Kim Natasha observed that the professional handling expected of such events had not materialised, with attendees left uninformed until the final hour before the intended opening.

Nevertheless, a number of individuals offered support for the organisers.

Lois Yasmin Turner conveyed empathy, acknowledging the evident stress experienced while attempting to stage the event and wishing better conditions for future arrangements.

Donna Blohm suggested the team had performed admirably under challenging circumstances, noting that when conditions are unsafe, the responsible decision must take precedence.

In remarks to this publication, Bournefest explained they had followed guidance from their event management and safety advisors.

A representative stated that upon becoming aware of the developing conditions, notification of the delayed opening was issued immediately.

Following further evaluation and consultation with relevant specialists shortly after four in the afternoon, the postponement decision was reached.

The welfare of visitors, performers and personnel remained the primary concern throughout.

The representative indicated the outcome was influenced by events occurring the previous day at a separate festival in the area.

A serious incident at that gathering, resulting in the death of a forty-one-year-old local church leader and injuries to six other attendees, had prompted heightened caution.

The statement concluded that organisers anticipated announcing a replacement date imminently.
