Phoenix Media launches hands-on work scheme for Hurstpierpoint sixth formers

A Sussex-based marketing company has introduced an immersive work experience initiative designed to give students genuine exposure to the industry rather than passive observation.

Phoenix Media Marketing created the programme specifically for two sixth form pupils from Hurstpierpoint College.

The initiative sought to provide the students with practical involvement in daily agency operations.

The managing director of the firm expressed strong support for business involvement in local education and helping young people discover available career paths.

According to the director, there exists a significant distinction between hearing a description of a profession and actually entering a workplace, participating in discussions, meeting professionals, and being given responsibility to try tasks independently.

The work placements were facilitated through Hurstpierpoint College’s established work experience framework, which organises approximately one hundred placement weeks annually for students.

This year, one hundred and one pupils sought placements, with four specifically requesting opportunities at Phoenix.

Instead of conventional shadowing, the company introduced the Phoenix Marketing Summer School.

The programme encompassed structured learning sessions, hands-on activities, attendance at client meetings, and involvement in actual client assignments.

Participants were actively encouraged to share their own suggestions and formulate independent approaches to given challenges.

One participant, identified as Cat B., offered positive remarks about the experience, noting the welcoming atmosphere and the level of involvement permitted, including participation in meetings and work on individual projects with genuine clients.

The company has indicated willingness to provide similar placements in subsequent years and aims to establish the summer school as an enduring component of its collaboration with nearby educational institutions.

Additionally, Phoenix has received an invitation to evaluate participation in career-focused events at the college during the upcoming academic year.

Representatives from Hurstpierpoint College acknowledged the significance of such placements.

A spokesperson for the institution emphasised that robust connections with nearby businesses provide considerable benefit in assisting pupils in investigating future possibilities.

Such arrangements grant students insight into professional settings, help develop self-assurance, and offer early understanding of how their passions and abilities might align with eventual employment.
