Olympic star inspires pupils with message on rest and recovery

Olympic gold doesn’t begin on the podium—it starts with a good night’s sleep.

That’s the message Matt Weston, double gold medallist and Skeleton World Champion, shared with pupils during a recent visit to St John’s C.E. Primary School in Crowborough, part of a special event organised in partnership with Dreams, the Official Sleep Partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB.

Mr Weston, who once attended the school himself, told students that quality rest is at the heart of his athletic success, supporting everything from performance and focus to recovery and resilience.

He said: “Sleep plays a huge role in everything I do and it really is essential for my recovery, focus and performance and a non-negotiable part of how I prepare and reset.

“That is why it was so special to come back to my old primary school, meet the pupils and teachers and share a message that has played such an important part in my own journey.

“Good sleep is just as important for children as it is for athletes, whether it helps them learn, play sport or simply feel their best every day and if they understand that early, it can make a real difference for the future.”

The visit included a school assembly and Q&A session, where Mr Weston encouraged pupils to think about how rest and recovery help them perform in the classroom and beyond.

With the help of Dreams’ mascot, Beddie, the day also included fun activities to promote healthy sleep habits.

Pupils were invited to create their own ‘Dreams Sleep Pledge,’ with ideas such as limiting screen time or moving more during the day.

The pledges were sent home as fridge reminders to help build better bedtime routines.

The event forms part of Dreams’ wider support for Team GB and ParalympicsGB, helping athletes rest and recharge during major competitions like the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Through its Dream Team sleep range, the company provides sleep solutions designed to optimise rest, recovery and overall performance for athletes at the highest level.
