A grassroots initiative delivering complimentary cultural programming to local neighbourhoods is marking its tenth incarnation this year.

Our Place, a component of the Brighton Festival, was established in 2017 under the direction of former guest director Kae Tempest with the goal of democratising access to creative experiences by collaborating with community members to develop performances and events tailored to their own districts.

For this cycle, the initiative stages its tenth iteration across Hangleton, Moulsecoomb, Bevendean and East Brighton.

Gemma Powell, who oversees Hangleton Community Centre, commented that the partnership with Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival has spanned seven years, and Our Place stands out as the most eagerly anticipated occasion throughout the entire Hangleton and Knoll district.

She highlighted the significant positive impact on the neighbourhood.

Ms Powell noted that the contribution Brighton Festival brings to the area is beyond valuation. Local residents gain access to performances and spectacles they would typically miss out on, thanks to the diverse and welcoming programming on offer. The organisation places great importance on accessibility, consistently considering every requirement when arranging activities and striving to guarantee participation opportunities for all.

To commemorate this milestone, Brighton Festival is arranging a day of creative workshops for families at Brighton Dome on Sunday, May 3.

Entry costs £12 per adult and child pairing, with pastimes including constructing functioning prototypes from discarded objects and experimenting with camera work.

On Monday, May 4, an unpaid Family Fun Day will be held at the venue, hosting informal sessions run by previous Our Place creatives-in-residence.

Pastimes will feature a soundless disco, insignia creation, clay shaping, mixed-media craft and shadow puppetry.

In East Brighton, environmental artist LEO is partnering with locals to establish a route of earth-based artworks and sculptures throughout the area.

A Family Fun Day is scheduled for May 10.

Slavka Jovanovic, who produces Our Place for Brighton Festival, observed that assisting the Our Place Steering Committees in fulfilling their artistic ambitions has been gratifying. Through meticulous planning and sensitivity, they engage with various community organisations and enrich their localities with creative output.
