A haulage firm based in Sussex is facing potential closure as a result of escalating fuel expenses triggered by the conflict involving Iran.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is encountering demands from parliamentarians to reduce fuel duty in response to the economic consequences stemming from warfare in the Middle East.

Approximately 20 percent of globally transported oil volumes are shipped via the Strait of Hormuz, which has been rendered largely inaccessible by Iran since the commencement of US and Israeli air strikes at the conclusion of February.

Chichester representative Jess Brown-Fuller indicated that the proprietor of a nearby transport enterprise has experienced a 40 percent surge in diesel expenditure, generating significant financial pressure.

She addressed Ms Reeves in the House of Commons on April 28, noting that the business faces possible collapse while corporations including BP announce record earnings.

Ms Reeves responded that fuel duty had never been lower during either the preceding Conservative administration or the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition.

She explained that circumstances were being monitored heading into September, while pointing out that income from fuel duty during the opening quarter of the year remained unchanged compared to the same period twelve months prior.

Regarding the earnings of energy corporations, she emphasised that this precisely justified the extension of the energy profits levy to guarantee that exceptional profits faced appropriate taxation.

She noted that BP and other petroleum and gas producers constitute a vital component of the nation’s energy portfolio, with significant British enterprises representing the country in the United States during the current week, while underscoring that exceptional profits warranted proper taxation through both the electricity generator levy and energy profits levy.

According to last year’s spending plan, fuel duty, presently fixed at 52.95 pence per litre for standard petrol and diesel, is slated to revert to its March 2022 levels by March 2027.

This adjustment is anticipated to occur gradually, with a 1 penny increase on September 1, 2026, followed by an additional 2 pence from December 1, and a further 2 pence the following spring.
