Plans submitted to change use of historic barn and manor house

Published on

East Brighton Trust (EBT) has applied to change the use of Moulsecoomb Place Manor House and the Tithe Barn.

Last year the trust signed a lease to take over Moulsecoomb Place, in Lewes Road, Brighton.

It said that it planned to offer educational opportunities for disadvantaged members of the local community by providing access to creative, cultural and educational spaces.

Moulsecoomb Social Club will continue to use its space at the back of the manor house.

Brighton University has moved its offices that were there to the Moulescoomb campus.

The Tithe Barn, which dates from the 19th century, and the neighbouring 16th century half-timbered aisle barn were used by One World Nursery until 2021.

The application, which can be seen on Brighton and Hove City Council website, is for the flexible use of Moulsecoomb Place and the Tithe Barn for office and business, educational use, social club and supporting community and administrative functions.

The application said: “The bold ambition in the longer term is to extend the remit for EBT on this site beyond the confines of the Manor House (and) Tithe Barn and immediate lawns to create a broader community campus, potentially incorporating the council’s Moulsecoomb Hall and library site.

“Discussions are at an early stage with Brighton and Hove City Council in this regard.

“Consequently, at this juncture, the concept of a larger community campus remains aspirational and is not material to this application.

“Similarly, it is only through the occupation of the listed buildings by EBT that its longer-term aspirations for the site can be fully understood and captured.

“Therefore, as an initial measure, interim use of the premises by EBT is sought, with the purpose of this application being to regularise this use via a standalone change of use application.”

Organisations already using the space include Audio Active, Culture Shift and the Vincent Dance Theatre.
