Beachgoer spots rare jellyfish with painful sting off Sussex coast

Published on

A beachgoer discovered an unusual marine creature along the Sussex shoreline.

Brighton local Piers Helm came across the jellyfish at Hove beach close to the King Alfred Leisure Centre while preparing to take a dip on the morning of Wednesday, July 8.

He considers it to be a compass jellyfish, a species typically inhabiting the southern and western British coastline during the summer season.

Compass jellyfish can be identified by their characteristic brown pattern resembling a compass dial; however, members of the public are cautioned against handling them as they possess a painful sting.

During June, the RNLI issued a caution that the hot conditions are heightening the probability of swimmers encountering jellyfish.

An RNLI representative stated that these creatures are invariably problematic during this period, though with the pleasant conditions, greater numbers of people are becoming aware of them while using the sea for recreation.

The organisation consistently recommends that visitors to the coast frequent beaches monitored by lifeguards whenever feasible and bathe within the designated safe swimming zones marked by red and yellow flags.

The majority of jellyfish present in British and Irish seas pose no danger, though certain varieties can inflict stings that range from minor to intense.

The moon jellyfish, distinguished by its four ring-shaped markings, occurs most frequently.

More notable is the barrel jellyfish, which can reach widths of approximately one metre, with one such specimen having been observed near the Seaford coastline in May.

Lifeguards receive instruction on managing jellyfish stings through careful tentacle removal, cleansing the impacted skin with cool seawater while abstaining from using tap water or ice packs, and immersing the wound in hot water for a minimum of half an hour.

The RNLI emphasises that individuals suffering a severe or critical response should dial 999 or 112 without delay and request emergency medical transport.

Those visiting the shore are also urged to refrain from handling jellyfish regardless of whether they appear deceased, as they retain their capacity to sting.

Donning wetsuits or protective swimwear can provide added protection against stings for individuals intending to enter the water.
