Volunteer spends years clearing coastal path of 50 tonnes of stones

A single individual’s dedication is transforming a cherished section of the Sussex coastline.

Lee Bashford, who is 55 years old, has devoted numerous weeks to removing stones and rubble from the undercliff footpath linking Saltdean with Brighton Marina, enhancing safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and mobility scooter users alike.

As a tradesman with three decades and more of experience in the construction industry working as a hod carrier, Mr Bashford estimates he has shifted between 40 and 50 tonnes of material during the past month, accomplishing the work entirely by hand.

He expressed that he had never encountered such an outpouring of positive feedback and expressions of gratitude. Having spent four decades on building sites, he noted that appreciation of that kind was virtually unheard of in his line of work.

Bashford explained how his efforts along the path have substantially reduced hazards. He noted that the accumulation of rocks created unsafe conditions, with people sustaining injuries and slipping, and electric scooters being propelled into the air.

The 55-year-old explained that his coastal work had provided valuable support for managing his mental health difficulties. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and associated mental health issues. Removing the pebbles and engaging with passers-by had brought him considerable joy, he said.

His labours have completely renewed the route connecting Rottingdean with the marina.

Anthony James Whitfield, who regularly traverses the undercliff path, explained the remarkable change Mr Bashford had brought about.

He explained that back in April, while cycling westward in the direction of the Marina, he spotted a topless man carefully brushing stones and sand from the paved surface, shovelling the debris into a container before depositing it back onto the beach. During the May bank holiday weekend, the same individual was again shirtless with a deep tan, systematically clearing the sun-baked concrete beneath the chalk cliffs. He turned back and stopped to inquire whether the man was employed by the local authority, which he confirmed he was not.

According to Anthony James Whitfield, Lee Bashford stated that he was a hard worker, and if he did not undertake the task, then who would.

His commitment has attracted considerable attention, with numerous path users conveying their appreciation directly as they travel past.
